8) Develop self-confidence
by ChanMaster Ben Xing
One little monkwanted to get hishigh-ordination. First, the instructing monk asked: “Who madeyou come to gethigh-ordination?”
The instructingmonk slapped him, said:“Because your master asked you to do so, you came here. What will be if yourmaster didn’t ask you?”
Next, the guidingmonk asked him a samequestion: “Who asked you come to get high-ordination?”
Because he wasbeaten once, the little monkbecame clever now, and he thought: just now Ireplied that my master sent mehere so I was beaten. Thus, he changed theprevious answer: “I came by myself.”
The guiding monkslapped him and said: “Yourmaster didn’t ask you come, you unexpectedly came byyourself.”
Being beatentwice, the little monk becameindecisive.
Why was heindecisive? His self-confidencewas not enough; he had no confidence to his ownanswer.
At the moment whenthe Buddha was born, hewalked for seven steps; a lotus appeared on each step,he pointed to the skywith one hand and the ground with the other hand, claimed:“I am the onlyesteemed one in the universe.”
The Christ said:“I am a road, the truth andlife”.
Chan Master DanXia cleaved a Buddha image toburn for nursing warm; the monks in temple scoldedhim.
He defendedhimself: “I burn the image to getrelics and it’s convenient to enshrine it.”
Other monks frozeblankly: “How can a woodBuddha image be burnt to get relics?”
He said: “Sincethe wood Buddha imagecouldn’t be born to relics, it is not the real Buddha. Then let’s burn down theother two images.”
Of course, Dan Xiacould do that, but youcan’t do as he did. At that time, another monk saw DanXia behaved that; so atone time, he also followed Dan Xia as an example to burnthe Buddha image to nursewarm. Unfortunately, the Buddha image was not burnt, his eyebrow was burnt tofire. Why? Dan Xia was one master who saw his ownnature, so he needn’t tofollow the Buddha; but his dharmabrother, has not seenown nature, and then could he burn the Buddha image?
Thus, Chan MasterLin Ji said: “If one wants to attain enlightenment, he should not bedeluded byothers; he should care about his inner sense and outer condition, andkillwhatever he meets (defilement); even kill the Buddha if he meets, killthepatriarch if he meets, kill parents if he meets. Don’t let yourmindconstrained by the external condition, if so you will feel free and begintoget mental salvation.”
But everyone, please don’t misunderstand whatI had said. I didn’t ask you go to kill the realBuddha､real patriarchand real parents. If you kill them youmade Buddha blooding, you made parentsblooding, so you will fall into thehell.
Here, I justinspire you that everyone isequal on the truth. There is no authority, no icon.
Buddha hasBuddha-nature, you also haveBuddha-nature, and this Buddha-nature is equal.
You are also aBuddha, the future Buddha;you should have self-confidence.
So, everyone whois sitting here, hasAvalokitesvara come”?
If you say “yes”,you guess it, you aremaking a lie.
If you say “Notknow”, this show you have noself-confidence.
If you say “Notcome”, how it can be so? “Ifthere is water in one thousand rivers there arealso one thousand moonsappearing in them, if there is no cloud then there arevisible sky.” Avalokitesvaraexists everywhere. All these answers show that youdon’t have self-confidence,you are confounded.
But it doesn’tmatter, you try to makeeffort. When you realize the truth, you are notconfounded.
When you have notgot enlightenment, you willnever have self-confidence.
